The Lagos State Government has issued a warning to residents about potential flash flooding due to recent heavy rainfall. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab explained that the Oyan Dam’s water release has caused channels to overflow into rivers, and major drainage channels are struggling to discharge.
Residents in low-lying areas and along the Ogun River are advised to prioritize their safety by relocating to higher grounds to avoid loss of lives and properties. The government expects more rainfall throughout October and the remaining months.
Wahab highlighted that water levels at four gauge stations have drastically increased, with areas like Kara, Isheri-North GRA, Majidun, and Falomo already experiencing river flooding. Specifically:
