- The Palace of the Oba of Benin has distanced itself from a planned dramatisation of the Igue Festival by ACERE.
- The event, scheduled for Sunday at the Muson Centre in Lagos, was organised without the consent or consultation of the Oba of Benin.
- The Palace expressed concerns that the dramatisation would distort the traditional performance of the Igue Festival.
- The Benin Traditional Council obtained a court order to restrain ACERE from staging the event or using the Oba’s image without his consent.
The Palace of the Oba of Benin has made it clear that it’s not involved in a planned dramatization of the Igue Festival by the Association for Cultural and Economic Renaissance of Edo (ACERE). This event is scheduled to take place on Sunday at the Muson Centre in Lagos.
According to Mr. Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin, the Palace didn’t give its consent or consultation for the event. The Igue Festival is a significant cultural and religious event in the Benin Kingdom, and its performance is reserved for the Oba of Benin.
The Palace has expressed serious concerns that the dramatization would distort the traditional performance of the Igue Festival. As a result, the Benin Traditional Council has taken the matter to court, obtaining an order to restrain ACERE from staging the event or using the Oba’s image without his consent.
