The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the commencement of operations at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (Warri Refinery), with a capacity of 125,000 barrels per day. This development comes shortly after the Port Harcourt Refinery began its 60,000-barrel-per-day operations.
According to the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mele Kyari, the Warri Refinery is currently operational, although repairs are still ongoing. Kyari emphasized that the refinery’s operations are a testament to the possibility of achieving real progress in Nigeria.
The Warri Refinery, located in Delta State, is a major player in Nigeria’s petrochemical industry, producing polypropylene and carbon black for markets in the southern and southwestern regions of the country. The refinery was commissioned in 1978 and has been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
The commencement of operations at the Warri Refinery is a significant milestone for NNPCL, demonstrating its commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s refining capacity and reducing reliance on imported petroleum products.
