Thirteen Nigerien soldiers lost their lives in two separate clashes with jihadist groups, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in Niger. The first incident occurred on March 15 at a gold mining site in the western Tillaberi region, where nine soldiers were killed in combat with Islamic State affiliates. Reinforcements from across the Burkina Faso border arrived on around 100 motorcycles, prompting a joint air and ground operation with neighboring countries that killed 55 jihadists. Unfortunately, seven Nigerien soldiers were also wounded in the attack .

Two days later, a military outpost on the other side of the Sahel country was attacked by a group of around 300 fighters identified as belonging to Boko Haram. The attackers used booby-trapped vehicles and explosives, killing four soldiers. Niger has been governed by a junta since a July 2023 coup, but unrest persists due to a surge in militant activities, democratic backsliding, and severe socio-economic consequences from sanctions .

To address these challenges, Niger is joining forces with junta-led allies Mali and Burkina Faso to establish a joint 5,000-strong force. This coalition aims to tackle overlapping security challenges, including jihadist insurgency, organized crime, and human trafficking networks .
