Tinubu Urges University Workers to Embrace Negotiations Amid Strike Threats

•⁠ ⁠Commitment to Uninterrupted Academic Sessions: Tinubu assured that his administration is committed to ensuring universities remain open for continuous quality teaching, research, and community service.
•⁠ ⁠Payment of Withheld Salaries: The President directed the payment of four months’ withheld salaries for academic staff and non-teaching staff, despite the ‘no work, no pay’ rule.
•⁠ ⁠Removal from Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS): The Federal Government will remove university staff salaries from IPPIS, responding to the unions’ pleas.
•⁠ ⁠Student Loans: Tinubu announced the Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND) to provide opportunities for students to learn and repay later.

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to university workers to give peace a chance and engage in negotiations, amid threats of strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, and the Senior Staff Associations of Nigerian Universities. The unions are demanding payment of withheld salaries from the 2022 strike and implementation of the 2009 agreement.

University of Ilorin’s 39th Convocation

At the University of Ilorin’s 39th convocation, Tinubu urged graduating students to join efforts to tackle Nigeria’s economic and security challenges. The university awarded certificates and diplomas to 12,042 graduates, including 256 First Class graduates.

Call for Peace and Negotiations

Tinubu emphasized that universities, like the nation, need peace to prosper. He urged university workers to embrace negotiations, ensuring that institutions remain open for quality education.
