- IPOB did not call for an election boycott as part of the agreement, but Kanu remains in detention nearly two years after Tinubu’s emergence as President.
Nnamdi Kanu’s family has voiced disappointment over President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s failure to honour an alleged agreement to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). According to Prince Emmanuel Kanu, his brother’s release was conditional upon IPOB not boycotting the 2023 general election.
The agreement was reportedly made between Tinubu’s son Seyi and Prince Emmanuel before the election. Seyi had confirmed that his father sanctioned the meeting, and any agreement reached would be binding on the then-candidate Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Despite IPOB’s commitment to not interfering with the election, Kanu remains in detention nearly two years after Tinubu’s emergence as President. This has led to disappointment and frustration among Kanu’s family, who feel that those who claimed to be honourable have failed to keep their words.
