A three-story building collapsed on Oremeta Street in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos State, killing two people and injuring 12 others. The building, which housed an eatery called Equal Right Restaurant on the ground floor, was partially occupied, with the upper floors left unoccupied.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, along with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), responded quickly to the incident. Rescue teams were able to rescue 12 adults with varying degrees of injuries. The injured were first treated by Lagos State Ambulance Services before being taken to the hospital for further treatment.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation. However, Margaret Adeseye, Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, noted that unoccupied buildings can lose their integrity and strength over time, making them prone to collapse.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and Nigerian Police, among others. The rescue operation was concluded, and the situation was brought under control. This incident comes barely five days after a storey building under construction collapsed at Agarawu Street, off Aroloya Central Mosque, Idumota, Lagos Island.
