Matthew Livelsberger, the decorated US special forces soldier suspected of blowing up a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, apparently shot himself in the head before the blast, authorities said Thursday. Livelsberger, 37, a member of the elite Green Berets, appears to have committed suicide in the rented vehicle, which was filled with fuel containers and fireworks and erupted into flames.

According to Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill, Livelsberger’s body was burned beyond recognition, but authorities have “a lot of confidence” that he was the sole occupant of the Cybertruck. The suspect was identified through his military ID, passport, and credit cards, and had a gunshot wound to the head, with a gun found at his feet.

FBI Special Agent Spencer Evans stated that the motivation behind the blast remains unknown, and investigators have found no links to terrorist organizations. Additionally, Livelsberger had legally purchased two semi-automatic handguns on Monday, which were found in the remains of the vehicle.

The incident occurred on January 1, 2025, when the Tesla Cybertruck caught fire and exploded outside the Trump International Hotel, killing one person and injuring seven others.
