Why South East Govs Can’t Tackle Insecurity

  • The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) believes that South East governors cannot effectively tackle insecurity without partnering with town unions.
  • ASITU argues that town unions understand the local dynamics and can help develop a locally-tailored security strategy.
  • The continued detention of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is seen as a contributing factor to insecurity in the region.

The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has emphasized that South East governors cannot successfully address insecurity in the region without collaborating with town unions. According to ASITU, town unions possess a deep understanding of local dynamics and can play a crucial role in developing effective security strategies.

ASITU’s National President, Chief Emeka Diwe, noted that any security approach that fails to incorporate the unique characteristics of the local population is doomed to fail. Instead, Diwe advocates for a locally-developed and modernized security system that leverages the expertise of town unions.

The ongoing detention of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is also seen as a significant contributor to insecurity in the region. ASITU has called for Kanu’s release, arguing that it would help alleviate tensions and create an opportunity for reassessing security situations in the South East.

In essence, ASITU is urging South East governors to adopt a more collaborative approach to addressing insecurity, one that acknowledges the critical role of town unions in understanding and addressing local security challenges. By doing so, governors can develop more effective security strategies that are tailored to the unique needs of their communities.
