ABUJA – Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is currently in custody at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja.
According to reliable sources at the Commission’s headquarters, Bello was arrested in a midnight sting operation.
A source familiar with the development stated that Bello, who had initially claimed to have voluntarily honoured the commission’s invitation, was trailed and arrested by EFCC operatives in Lokoja at midnight.
“Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, is currently at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja. He was arrested in Lokoja, with operatives trailing and apprehending him at midnight,” the source said.
Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, has honored the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) .According to his media aide, Ohiare Michael, Bello’s decision came after consulting with his family, legal team, and political allies, demonstrating his respect for the rule of law and constituted authority .
Bello is facing allegations of money laundering to the tune of N80.2 billion . The EFCC had previously attempted to arrest him, but he was reportedly spirited away by the current Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo .
The case against Bello is ongoing, with the EFCC prosecuting him alongside three other suspects on 19-count charges ² ³. The former governor’s lawyer had filed applications to revoke the arrest warrant and determine the court’s jurisdiction, but the court insisted on Bello’s physical appearance for arraignment before entertaining any applications .
