The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the death rumour of its national chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. According to INEC, the rumour is a fake news narrative circulated on social media, claiming that Yakubu died at a London hospital. However, INEC insists that Yakubu is alive, hale, and hearty.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, INEC, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, urged the general public to disregard the rumour, stating that Yakubu has not travelled to London in the last two years. Oyekanmi also pointed out that Yakubu was present at recent meetings with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters and Resident Electoral Commissioners.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that mischief-makers have spread a similar fake story about Yakubu’s death. A similar rumour was circulated on social media in 2021. INEC has warned those who indulge in this practice to be mindful of its effect on the individual and the wider society.
